Specialist in the field of water affairs
The Environment Agency oversees the implementation of water management, which includes, among other things, working on the long-term protection of water resources. One of our biggest projects in environmental protection is to protect water and prevent further deterioration of water quality. There are diverse and exciting projects ahead in this field.
At Umhverfisstofnun, the position of an expert in the field of water affairs in the ocean and water team is available for application. The specialist will work in a strong group where foresight, cooperation and success in interdisciplinary cooperation are emphasized. The specialist’s main tasks consist in the implementation of projects related to the implementation of laws on water management, such as Iceland’s water plan, including action plans and monitoring plans. This is a diverse and exciting project related to water conservation, for example processing data on water quality, assessing the state of water and stress on the water resource. The job also involves working with a diverse group of professionals and stakeholders on issues related to water protection that fall within the scope of the Environmental Agency. There is a lot of communication with European and international institutions.

The Environmental Agency operates at nine establishments around the country. The choices are Hellissand, Patreksfjörður, Ísafjörður, Akureyri, Mývatn, Egilsstaði, Hella, Vestmannaeyjar and Reykjavík.
Main tasks and responsibilities
- Enforcement of laws and regulations in the field of water affairs
- Implementation and follow-up of the water plan for Iceland
- Issues related to water quality, water protection and assessment of stress on water
- Preparation of instructions, reviews, data submission, follow-up of actions in the action plan, collaboration with various stakeholders and teams within the Environmental Agency
- Foreign and domestic cooperation related to water management
Qualification requirements
- A university degree at master’s level in a science that is useful for work is required, such as biology, engineering or environmental and resource studies
- Knowledge of public administration is a strong advantage
- Organized and independent working methods
- Good cooperation skills and flexibility in communication
- Digital competence
- Good command of Icelandic and English both in speech and writing
- Solid knowledge of one Nordic language
